Selangor Special Public Holiday – Sultan’s Silver Jubilee

Posted on September 15, 2026 by Dzulfadhli Bin Lamin

Selangor is marking a royal milestone this October. The State Government has announced Sunday, 25 October 2026 as a special public holiday (cuti peristiwa) in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of the reign of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj.

Because 25 October falls on a Sunday, the State has designated Monday, 26th October 2026 as the replacement public holiday. The State Secretary indicated that this holiday will be observed in the same manner as Selangor's 1 September 2026 special holiday.

Private-sector employers are encouraged to grant the day off, but the decision remains subject to the employer's public-holiday policy, contractual commitments and operational requirements.

In short, it may be a long weekend - but HR should check the Company's holiday policy before everyone books Monday brunch. A clear decision now will avoid payroll confusion and last-minute operational surprises later.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON THE SELANGOR SPECIAL PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Q1: Is Monday, 26 October 2026 automatically compulsory for every private-sector employer in Selangor?

No. Based on the current State announcement, private-sector employers are encouraged to observe the holiday, but it is not automatically mandatory for every company. The employer should first review its published holiday calendar, employment terms, collective agreement (if any), policy and past practice.

The Silver Jubilee date and special holiday fall on Sunday, 25 October 2026. The State Government has therefore designated the following day, Monday, 26 October 2026, as the replacement holiday.

The Company should honour the published calendar unless a lawful substitution is made. A previously announced holiday may form part of the employees' employment terms or a binding workplace representation. Any change should be communicated clearly and, where section 60D requires agreement for substitution, documented with the affected employees.

Yes, subject to operational requirements. Where the Company is observing 26 October as a paid public holiday, employees covered by the statutory special-payment provisions must receive the applicable public-holiday rates under section 60D of the Employment Act 1955. Employees outside those payment provisions should receive the benefits provided by their contracts or Company policy, such as replacement leave where applicable.

Generally, the relevant work location and the Company's applicable holiday calendar should be considered. A branch outside Selangor would ordinarily follow that State or Federal Territory's calendar. For remote or hybrid employees, HR should apply the contractual or assigned work location consistently.

Confirm whether the Company will observe 26 October; update the holiday calendar, attendance system and work rosters; notify employees in writing; and alert payroll to the appropriate paid-holiday or work-on-holiday treatment. One clear memo now is much easier than twenty payroll questions later.
