Selangor Public Holiday on 1st September 2026 (SUKMA Games Success)
Following the announcement by the Selangor Menteri Besar declaring Tuesday, 1 September 2026 as a special public holiday for the State of Selangor please note that this is a declaration made under Section 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951.
The legal obligations for employers in Selangor depend on your company’s existing public holiday policy.
Option A: Companies observing a fixed list of public holidays
Status: Non-compulsory
Action: Operations may continue as usual on 1 September 2026. Providing this as an additional public holiday is entirely at the management’s discretion.
Option B: Companies observing ALL gazetted or Status public holidays
Status: Compulsory
Action: You are legally required to observe 1 September as an additional paid public holiday.
Working on the Holiday: Employees may still be required to work. Those entitled to special payments under the Employment Act 1955 must be paid the requisite public holiday rates, while the other employees will receive benefits in accordance with their employment terms, i.e. replacement leave.
Since 1 September 2026 immediately follows the National Day holiday, please be aware that if an employee is absent without approval or reasonable excuse on a working day immediately before or after the public holiday will forfeit their entitlement to holiday pay for 1st September 2026 pursuant to Section 60D(2) of the Employment Act 1955, and may be subject to disciplinary action.
